Description
Spittleborough Roundabout is a roundabout interchange at Junction 16 of the M4. The A3102 from Swindon to Royal Wootton Bassett and Lyneham crosses here, and the B4005 to Wroughton terminates. Because of how busy this junction is, it has traffic signals at every exit.
History
Originally there was no junction here; the A420 (present day A3102) passed through, connecting Swindon and Oxford to Calne and Lyneham. The Wroughton road used to connect to the A420 further along, at the present day roundabout with the B4534.
When the M4 was built here in the early 1970s, it met the A3102, and a simple roundabout interchange constructed. Because of the junction's proximity to the B4005, it was decided to break that road into two halves, and to connect the southern half into this junction.
Future
With the development of a new housing / business estate to the south of Swindon and the construction of a new southern link road which will tie into the B4005, traffic through this junction is expected to increase significantly. As a result, plans have been submitted widen the slip roads off the M4, and to create a link road from the northbound A3102 to the B4005 that bypasses the roundabout. These changes have been delayed due to discussions between the developers, the Highways Agency, Swindon Borough Council and Wiltshire Council.
