St Georges Cross is a historic junction in the north west corner of Glasgows city centre, which has been almost completely consumed by the sprawling mass of the M8 and its sliproads to the south east. It is therefore quite difficult to describe how the junction works, as in many ways it is now just the northern end of the sprawling tangle of slips that form Glasgow's modern Charing Cross junction. Historically, it seems to have been a fairly simple crossroads, with a fifth arm in the north west corner. The main route through was latterly the A82 Great Western Road / New City Road, while the extra arm was the B811 on Maryhill Road. St George's Road was, in comparison, unclassified.
Wholescale demolition has seen a small square opened up in the south west corner of this old cross, and a statue of St George and the Dragon has been erected amongst some trees. The whole emphasis of the old junction has moved south, with the now mostly unclassified Maryhill Road also re-routed to the new cross. The last few metres approaching the junction have been claimed by the A82 as the eastbound off slip onto the A804. Here, the A804 approaches from the south along St George's Road, and turns right onto the new Phoenix Road.
Just a few paces to the south, the A82 soars overhead on a substantial concrete embankment, which becomes a flyover to cross the M8 and enter the tangle of Charing Cross junction. Immediately to the south of the A82, a westbound onslip turns off the A804, but there is no direct access from the A804 or St George's Cross into the city centre.
