Red Gate, also known as Red Hill, takes its name from the Red (now faded pink) Gate across the road to Plantation House at the junction. Although ostensibly a crossroads it is rather more complicated than that. Heading up the A1 from Half Tree Hollow the most obvious thing is that the road opens out for a wide fork. The A1 continues to the left, while the road to Plantation House and Sapper Way forks right through the Red Gate. The road climbs slightly to pass through the gate, with the narrow gateposts leading to priority given to traffic from the junction and a give way line for the downhill traffic. Beyond the gateway the two roads are parallel, and almost at the same level, separated only by a wall on a grassy bank, before the road to Plantation turns right away from the junction.
At the point where the road opens out to the fork, a side road doubles back left up the hill to High Knoll Fort, a short steep climb leading to the car park. There is also a track leading off to the right to access some houses. One final road leads off from the junction, turning left opposite the point where the two roads from the fork finally part company. This leads down across a gut and up to Francis Plain, home to the islands Secondary School.
