It was originally a small junction between the A1 and A19 named Willow Bridge. The two roads met after both passing under the railway, before they would then cross the River Don on Mill Bridge, and the railway on North Bridge Road.
By the 1960s, this junction had become a roundabout, albeit smaller than the one there today. A new Mill Bridge had been built, and Power Station Road was built to connect to the industrial estates. Mill Bridge was upgraded to a dual carriageway in the 1960s, and later renamed St Mary's Bridge.
At some point the junction was replaced by a much larger and wider roundabout, which incorporated Sprotbrough Lane and Hunt Road. The new junction runs under the railway line, and was built on an old industrial unit.
In 2002 the new North Bridge opened, to relieve the original bridges. Willow Bridge Road and the old Don Cinema were demolished, but several buildings survived, including the former Three Horse Shoes pub.
