Additional Information
Bridge Type:  Swing Bridge

The Swing Bridge at Whitby crosses the River Esk in the centre of Whitby. The current bridge was built in 1908-9, although there has long been a crossing at this point. It formerly carried the A171, however, this has since been re-routed onto a bypass of the town to the south.

The bridge is not wide enough to carry vehicles in both directions, and so traffic signals are used to alternate flow.

In July 2019 it was announced that the bridge would be closed to vehicles on weekends during the summer school holidays as a result of concerns about congestion on the bridge as well as special events taking place at weekends.
