T Roads in Britain were proposed in 1936 as numbers to classify trunk roads. There were plans to sign them instead of A roads, however they weren't as A road numbers were starting to be signed well and used for navigation and the National Grid made it unnecessary to define trunk roads than creating a new set of numbers, so Trunk Roads became known by a description, such as the London - Carlisle - Inverness trunk road.

Two competing numbering systems existed - one based on A roads, the other sequential.
