Talk:M74 and A74(M) History

I'm surprised to see the latest changes to the M74/A74(M) page. The idea that the eventual renaming as M6 would have covered only the A74(M) and not the M74 is a theory that I among others have entertained in the past, but it's not established fact. Indeed, the latest evidence is that, at the period when eventual renaming was intended, it would have covered the M74 as well.

For example, see the Explanatory Note on the following page of the Edinburgh Gazette from May 1 1992:

http://www.edinburgh-gazette.co.uk/issues/23161/pages/1325

Incidentally this Explanatory Note appears to be one of the first times the name A74(M) was ever mentioned in any published document. At first the plan seems to have been to use the name M74 throughout.

I also have some quotes from Hansard which say that the whole route would eventually be renamed. I posted a link to one recently in the "M74 extension, a few pics" thread in the forums.

I hope to add a historical section to this page soon. Wrinkly 10:03, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

Splitting the page up

This page is getting very long, thanks to the excellent 5* history section. I suggest splitting it up, portal style. Do people agree? (as an aside - why is this one page, not two? - I see no reason why you can't have a common history, etc page, and separate pages for the two different motorways with route logs and other stuff. Given we don't discuss Ax(M) on Ax pages, it seems strange to discuss Ax(M) on a joint Mx and Ax(M) page. We don't have an M42 and A42 page, or an M6 and A74(M) page, and I fail to see how this should be different.) Sabristo simon 17:04, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

The primary difference with the M74/A74(M) is that they share junction numbers, although this is not enough reason in itself. I think it should be portalised, retaining this page as the 'portal' and then describing the routes in their respective pages, perhaps with a combined history as suggested. That would hopefully cover all bases!! Rileyrob 17:09, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
I'd also support the portalisation (yes, I know that's not a word) of this. Jeni (talk) 17:12, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

That's OK by me. Wrinkly 22:44, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

Have portalised - feel free to improve pages and neaten up (and correct the mess I've made) as you see fit. Sabristo simon 12:04, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
