York was the last settlement in the county to be what would now be considered a county town - that's the criteria I've used elsewhere with no issue (and has been done with other counties that don't form a modern administrative area, such as Westmorland). M5lenzar 17:56, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

York hasn't been the county town since the late 1800's - There have been many county towns of the various ridings including Wakefield, Barnsley, Northallerton and others - please stop trying to change history to your own view of the world Haydn1971 18:18, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
