1970 proposal
Thamesmead Interchange was a planned junction intended to allow access between Ringway 2 and the new town of Thamesmead. At least six designs for the junction are known - two 4-level stacks, two 3-level stacked roundabouts, a large freeflowing gyratory and a folded dumbbell. The first five were for the original Ringway 2 scheme, the final layout was for the later East London River Crossing scheme.

Planning models for Thamesmead produced during the late 1960s show a variety of fascinating layouts for the junction. One of the 4-level stacks is a five way interchange with a link to Thamesmead town centre thrown in for good measure. It is not known if this and the other three early layouts were serious proposals or just suggestions. New Towns of the period often produced promotional literature illustrating futuristic designs and structures. The final layout for the junction dates from 1970 and would have consisted of a large freeflowing gyratory allowing access between the various roads. The junction would have been immediately south of the Thames Crossing which was planned to be a tunnel in 1970.

The Ringway proposals were dropped in 1973 but later that decade the scheme was revived as the East London River Crossing. By the late 1980s the plan was for a dual carriageway with a junction in the same location as the previous proposals but this time it was to be a much simplified folded dumbbell. This scheme was scrapped in 1993 due to strong environmental objections.
