|Location Map ( geo)|
The Pipers takes its name from the Pipers Inn which lies at the eastern end of the Junction. When heading from the west, it is essentially two right turns from the A39. The first doubles-back onto the A361 heading eventually to Taunton, although the A39 and M5 are often the quicker route. The second is an unclassified road across Walton Hill which was formerly signposted to the B3151, Somerton and Yeovil, but is now anonymously signed to 'Berhill'. Berhill is little more than the name of the road.
This is a surprisingly busy junction, with a lot of right-turning traffic. The main (right turn) traffic flows are from eastbound-A39 onto Walton Hill, and from the A361 onto eastbound-A39. Unfortunately, this means that all traffic is using the short stretch of road in between, which can cause jams at busy times. Perhaps this is why Walton Hill is no longer signed to the B3151. The sign at the other end of Walton Hill does still sign traffic to the A39 and M5, after all.
