Traffic Signals - Signal Heads

This article lists the most common types of traffic signal lantern found on UK roads. Some other variations may be found in certain installations (e.g. signal heads upgraded to third party LED aspects or superior reflective borders), but the most likely configurations are described below.

Design: Standard UK installation 1940-1970. Rapidly replaced by Mellor design in the early 1970s. Survived in Ireland as late as 2007.

Design: One-piece. Standard UK installation 1970 - c.2000, various manufacturers: Plessey (Later by Siemens), GEC, GEC Elliot, Page Signals (Later by Peek), Monitron and Traffic Systems Cooperative (the only company still manufacturing Mellor signals).

Aspect lens: Convex diffuser

Lighting: Halogen bulbs with reflectors

Borders (if fitted): Left and right pieces, short top and bottom borders

Design: Modular (with visible rounded corners on each module)

Lighting: Halogen bulbs with reflectors

Borders (if fitted): Left and right pieces, short top and bottom borders (as pictured). Later models have Polymer Solutions borders, which are mitred, bevelled, and more reflective.

Design: Modular (with visible rounded corners on each module)

Aspect lens: Flat and coloured.

Lighting: LED arrays (clearly visible)

Borders (if fitted): Left and right pieces, short top and bottom borders (as pictured). Later models have Polymer Solutions borders, which are mitred, bevelled, and more reflective.

Design: One-piece appearance (with optional "bolt on" box signs and arrow aspects). Box signs (if fitted) protrude from the signal head, and have a convex surface.
