The Twin Sails Bridge was opened in 2012 to help relieve the neighbouring Poole Bridge and provide a permanent link across the channel - the two bridges should never be open at the same time.

The bridge lifts to provide clearance for boats heading into Holes Bay, with the road deck cut in such a way that when lifted it resembles two sails blocking the road ahead.

In 2018, it emerged that there was a problem with the lifting mechanism, while maintenance costs of the bridge regularly have run substantially over what was budgeted for[1].
