Ullapool's Primary importance is as the Ferry Port for Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. It is also the largest settlement on the coast between Fort William and Thurso, which isn't saying much! The towns history dates back to the end of the 18th Century, when it was founded by the British Fisheries as a new fishing port. This was partly a response to the clearances, but also because there was a lack of good harbours in the North West Highlands. The town today is a busy tourist destination in its own right, providing good facilities for the vast hinterland and not much more than an hour from the Highland Capital of Inverness.

There is, essentially, only one classified road in Ullapool, the A835. This route branches of the A9 at Tore Roundabout near Inverness, and whilst it ceases to be a Trunk Road in Ullapool, it continues north to the A837 at Ledmore Junction. The road to the
