A Warning Sign is usually a triangular sign designed to warn of a danger or hazard ahead. Before the Worboys Report introduced the now familiar modern signage, only a few warning signs used symbols to get the message across. Many had wordy plates mounted below the red warning triangle.
Since the Worboys Report, a much larger number of symbols have been created, and while a few have been changed or even deleted from the standards over the years, there are probably now more warning sign designs available to highway engineers than ever before. For the full list, see the box below.
