Waterford is a city in southeast Ireland. It is an important place on the road network as the end of the N9 / M9 radial route from Dublin, and the N25 that runs along the south coast. The N24 cross-country road to Limerick also starts here.

For years, the Rice Bridge over the River Suir formed a notorious bottleneck, as it was the only point of access across the river for miles, and required all major traffic, including the above national primary roads, to head through the city's suburbs and docklands in order to cross. The Suir Bridge opened in October 2009 and saw a major upgrade to the N25's route, crossing the river upstream on a modern grade-separated dual carriageway, allowing easier access to the M9 and N24.
