Waten Crossroads lies in the middle of the small, but pretty village of Watten on the A882 between Wick and Thurso. The junction is hemmed in between old stone buildings, with what appears to be an old toll house on the north west corner. Visibility from the B870 on the approaches is not great, which means that they have stop lines rather than the more common give way markings. Traffic levels are low, however, and there is rarely any difficulty in turning out. The eastern arm of the B870 across the foot of the Loch of Watten is the only part of the lengthy route which isn't single track.
