Webbs Farm Interchange is junction 15 of the A12.
The junction was first built as part of the Margaretting Bypass as a simple fork onto the existing 1940s dual carriageway between this junction and Widford Roundabout. The junction existed in this form until the southern bypass opened in 1986.
In 1971 the first proposals were made to build a new bypass around the south of Chelmsford rather than upgrading the existing 1930s bypass. Rather than destroying what was already there this proposal retained the existing bridge and added a new bridge for the southbound movements.
By 1974 the proposals had been rationalised to remove the links between Margaretting and A12 east. In 1975 the scheme went to public inquiry where the inspector recommended the existing 1930s bypass should be upgraded instead of building a new southern bypass.
The scheme then stalled for a few years whilst the government decided on its next moves. In the 1980s the southern bypass became the preferred option and the plan for the junction had now become a dumbbell which is how the junction was reconstructed as.
