Wellwood Bridge seen from the River Ayr Way

Wellwood Bridge, also known as Muirmill Bridge, carries the A70 across the River Ayr near Nether Wellwood. It is a single span concrete bridge which in appearance dates from the later 1930s or early 1950s. It carries a wide S2 carriageway between pavements, although these have been partially blocked by the installation of box shape crash barriers, presumably designed to protect the parapets. These are of a slender concrete panel design, with substantial piers over the abutments, and open sections in the central panel forming a pseudo balustrade. The terminal piers have stepped tops, giving an Art Deco appearance. The concrete appears to have once been a reddish colour, but is now weatherbeaten and stained, with repair patches, a far cry from what was probably its original bright appearance.
