Whitburn Interchange is junction 4 on the M8 and was opened in September 1969 as part of the section of M8 usually referred to as Dechmont to Whitburn. Dechmont is junction 3 but it would be wrong to conclude that the west end of this section was at junction 4.
The first section of the M8 to open was the Harthill bypass in November 1964 but it initially reached neither west to junction 5 nor east to junction 4. The short westward extension to junction 5 opened in 1965, but until 1969 the east end of the M8 remained more than a mile west of junction 5, with a temporary connection to the roundabout at the A706/B8084 (then A8/A706) junction just north of the motorway and north of Whitburn town centre.
