Wholeflats Roundabout is an important junction on the access to the Grangemouth docks and refinery complex. The M9 motorway is a short distance to the south west, and a dualled section of the A905 connects the two junctions. Turning east, the A905 runs along the southern side of the refinery, whilst the B9143 continues north east to meet the A904, giving access to other parts of the refinery and the docks.
The roundabout was built in the later 1970s or early 1980s on what had been a green field site in the early 1960s. The road network here developed slowly, with the growth of the refinery site, and some of the chronology can be traced through the mapping of the time. In 1966, the site is still fields, but by 1971 most of Inchyra road is complete. There is a gap of perhaps 200m immediately north of the current roundabout, and the current eastern arm of the A905 also has a gap over the River Avon. Three years later, Inchyra Road is complete, and numbered as the B9143 throughout, but the junction is still at this point a simple T junction. By the mid 1980s, The current layout had been completed, with the roundabout and A905 in place.
