Wishaw East Cross

Wishaw East Cross is the historic junction in the centre of Wishaw, which is now signalised. The A721 is the main through route through the town, running north west to Motherwell and south east to meet the A73 near Carluke. The A722 heads north east, also meeting the A73 at Newmains, while the B7032 heads south west to the suburbs that sit above the Clyde. None of these directions are signposted either at, or before the junction however. The A721 is also the towns main shopping street, meaning it has wide pavements and only a single lane in either direction, while the other two routes have just enough space to permit two turning lanes at the lights. All four stop lines are set well back from the pedestrian crossings at the actual junction, to provide sufficient room for long vehicles to negotiate the turns.

Wishaw West Cross

Wishaw is perhaps unusual in having more than one historically important junction in the town centre area, hence why the junction described above is the East Cross. The West Cross is located about half a mile to the north west along the A721, where it meets Bellhaven Road. This is now a signalised T junction, although in the past it was the meeting point of 6 routes. Main Street and Glen Road to the north have now been closed up from the A721 by a paved area, while Marshall Street to the south forks off Bellhaven Road just after the traffic lights.

Some people also classify the staggered crossroads between Hill Street and and the B7033, Kenilworth Avenue, a junction which lies between the East and West Crosses as Wishaw Cross. However, Kenilworth Avenue is the old driveway to the Coltness Estate, and therefore was not historically a public road.
