The Yew Tree Island is a roundabout on the A4040, the former Outer Ring Road on the eastern side of Birmingham. It is so named because there was originally a yew tree on the site of the roundabout, however this is now long gone.
It traditionally forms the main shopping area of north Yardley; however the shopping area now has competition from the recently upgraded Swan Centre ½ mile or so to the south.
It has always been a busy island for drivers and the amount of cars who use the island often exceed its capacity; unfortunately since the A4040 was dualled all the way back to the Swan Island significant queues now occur northbound with alarming regularity; because of the queuing traffic frequently backs up on hob moor road as well. The queues are not helped by the number of pedestrian crossings by the island.
There have been quite a few proposals over the years to try and improve the island, however none have ever been implemented and there is sadly little chance of any being actioned in the forseeable future
