The ZC42 follows Long Dalmahoy Road to the north of Balerno. It starts on the ZC41, Curriehill Road, and heads west, mostly following long straights, to reach Hags Farm. It then winds under the railway line to reach the council boundary. The road continues in to Kirknewton.
