The C5K is a long and meandering route to the south of the River Dee. It starts on the A957 at Lochton above the Burn of Sheeoch, and heads north east at first, running around the hills in Durris Forest. Despite getting within a mile of the South Deeside Road (B974), the two routes never meet, as the C5K stays higher up the hill, and snakes around to the east. After passing through Denside and Muirskie, it reaches the B979 at Craigwell. Here, a former sharp double bend has been reprofiled, but the two routes still briefly multiplex, northwards instead of eastwards.
Continuing east, the C5K forks left at the first junction and turns north, then back to the north east as it follows the Crynoch Burn. It crosses the line of the Stonehaven Fastlink near Craigentath. The route then turns north once more, crossing the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route to reach Auchlunies. A lengthy dogleg to the south finds the final section of the C5K as it again heads north east, this time on a somewhat straighter line, to reach the council boundary near the current A90 / A956 junction at Cove Bay. Indeed, the C5K number seems to continue to the junction. Furthermore, there is a suggestion that the C5K will reappear in Aberdeenshire once the junction works are complete, following part of the old sliproads south to the next junction at Findon.
