The C86M forms a crazy loop that runs deep into the hills north of Strathdon, serving the scattered houses and farms hidden in the deep folds of this breathtaking landscape. At nearl 10 miles long, the C86M is twice as long as the distance between its two ends. It starts on the A97 at Bridge of Buchat, and heads north west, following the Water of Buchat upstream through scenic Glen Buchat as far as Badenyon. Here, the C86M turns south, and crosses a pass to reach the headwaters of the Water of Nochty, and continues south and south east, running downstream to the A944 at Strathdon.
