Yeah, they have changed the orientation of the crossing though for the new tram line as originally it looked like this....

Again, it's disused for 25 years but we come quite close here on the Birkenhead Dock Branch: https://goo.gl/maps/GPiHczDjBq82
Re: Roundabout with railway in the middle
I understand it was actually brand new track put down as part of the A228 improvement works around 2003. At the time there were plans by Lafarge Cement to reopen the quarry.KeithW wrote: ↑Sun Jan 06, 2019 15:18What is baffling is why the line was not lifted as the whole shebang was abandoned decades before the roundabout was built.Big Nick wrote: ↑Sun Jan 06, 2019 10:05 How about this bit of unused and unattached track under the A228 in Kent?

Across the Channel in France we can see the remains of the Aerotrain!
Part of the test track on a roundabout in Gometz-la-Ville: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@48.67276 ... 384!8i8192
Sculpture on a roundabout at the other end: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@48.66824 ... 384!8i8192
In the middle is a road named for the Aerotrain designer, Jean Bertin. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Gom ... 4d2.126976
There are several kilometres of the track surviving today: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@48.66330 ... 704!8i4352

Re: Roundabout with railway in the middle
Yep. The roundabout and the track were built at the same time. For many years both the roundabout - which had no (connected) exits - and the track must have seemed complete mysteries. It only took about 10 years to build the bridge over the nearby river Medway to connect to the (still under construction) new village on the far side, for the roundabout to be explained. The railway line remains an enigma.Big Nick wrote: ↑Sun Jan 06, 2019 22:52I understand it was actually brand new track put down as part of the A228 improvement works around 2003. There's still some evidence of its UK counterpart too, the vehicle and shed still exists and you can sort of follow the test track route.Big Nick wrote: ↑Sun Jan 06, 2019 23:07 Across the Channel in France we can see the remains of the Aerotrain!

Re: Roundabout with railway in the middle
As well as travelling at snail's pace and flagmen walking in front of it because, despite road markings clearly showing the clearance, idiots still used to park in places whuch obstructed the train's passage. Seeing two or three burly blokes bouncing parked cars out of the way was not uncommon.Glenn A wrote: ↑Sun Jan 06, 2019 17:12The train used to have a bell to warn road users it was approaching.Big L wrote: ↑Sun Jan 06, 2019 15:28 I was wondering about the Weymouth harbour tramway, but this near miss seems to be the closest thing.

Re: Roundabout with railway in the middle
This roundabout still has tram lines through the middle, 55 years after the tramway closed:

Kenilworth
Leamington - although this is no longer a roundabout the road layout is much the same as when it was.
Let it snow.

The Luas Red line crossed three sliproads, but not the mainline of, the Red Cow Roundabount (the N7/M50 junction) until the junction rebuild, where it was grade seperated. Its on the 2005 aerial photography on map.geohive.ie but I cannot make it give me a deep link.

I have websites about: motorway services | Fareham
Re: Roundabout with railway in the middle
Until the 1980s there was a small roundabout here [gmap]https://goo.gl/maps/WSXQp475KKH2[/gmap]. The road had been resurfaced but across the roundabout there were tracks left over from a spur to the gas works. It appears the last load went across in 1969.

There is a relatively new one on the A7 at Eskbank:

I hope the central pier is passively safe!

Re: Roundabout with railway in the middle
I wonder whether a potential revival of the Borders Railway was taken into account at the time of the Eskbank bypass construction to allow any potential railway to easily pass over the roundabout.22inarow wrote: ↑Wed Jan 09, 2019 08:43 There is a relatively new one on the A7 at Eskbank:
