Motorway Gantry / sign construction

In the new new ALR sections of the M1 between J23a and J25 i have noticed that the gantries and signs seem to be a new type (to me anyway), where the frames are surrounded by a mesh metal structure, which I presume is to allow safer maintenance work. (There are also pre installed ladders)

So is this a new idea or is it seen elsewhere?

It appears to be unique to the M1 there and I hope it stays that way as it is beyond ugly and makes the entire motorway look like the trench from the Death Star.

Thank you Bryn, that is a great way of putting it. Maybe they recycled some props from the latest Star Wars movie

I'd also be concerned about the build up of dirt/grime/moss over time and them ending up looking even worse...
