Largest continuous SOX installation?
Hi all,
Which major road (A-road or motorway) has the longest stretch of functional SOX lighting. Wherever it is, I'm planning to record it with my dashcam before it kicks the bucket.
Cheers,
J

Re: Largest continuous SOX installation?
Does this include or exclude stretches where the odd light has been replaced with an SON or LED one? I've seen very few completely continuous stretches for about the last 5 years as LEDs have been progressively rolled out in many areas.
A majority of lights on both the major and minor roads around West Swindon were still SOX until very recently (only a few weeks ago), but the council is currently in the process of converting them all to LED.

The odd SON or LED is fine, as long as a whole section hasn't been replaced. Do you have the names of the roads you mentioned?

None of them are A-roads, and are currently in the process of being upgraded to LED.halowraith1 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 25, 2021 22:58 The odd SON or LED is fine, as long as a whole section hasn't been replaced. Do you have the names of the roads you mentioned?

I recall there was a reasonable stretch on a motorway I was on back in 2019 (possibly the M62?), but chances are the lights have been upgraded or removed altogether since.

I haven't really about much in the last year so I have no idea if these stretches have been replaced yet but these were full of SOX the last time I was there.

Until recently it was the M4 in Wales but that has been or is still in the process of being replaced, which makes the M60 section the longest...I think. Some of the A13 stock might last a few more years as there'll be no point replacing it before the rebuild for the Lower Thames Crossing.

Not very long, but are the ones at the bottom end of the M69/A46 still hanging in there?

Re: Largest continuous SOX installation?
I last went past this in June and a handful are still there. I think the double brackets on the M6 between the mainline and the slips roads are still SOX.Jonathan B4027 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 28, 2021 19:45 Not very long, but are the ones at the bottom end of the M69/A46 still hanging in there?

Bad news guys... There's roadworks on the M60 at Bredbury and Stockport. The SOX there might not be there for much longer.

Driving along it tonight, the A1 from South Mimms to the London boundary (where the speed limit drops to 50) has all Sodiums (SOX I think)

Was past this stretch on the M60 today and they are still there - no idea if they still work though, as it was the day time.

Re: Largest continuous SOX installation?
The last few weeks have seen the SOX removal and column replacement on the A1 from Sandy to Baldock in fits and spurts though from Biggleswade North to South its fairly significant with new LED's.
A shame as I have grown up with SOX lighting travelling up and down the A1 to London and will miss it, though this section of lights and columns was on its knees.
Hopefully if common sense prevails they can preserve the working ones to maintain the SOX section from South Mimms to Borehamwood which last Sunday was in pretty good working order.

Re: Largest continuous SOX installation?
A42 up to M1 at J23a has a long row of them. Presume they still work.
