Re: Council and private signs from pre-Worboys era
I am unsure whether these are pre worboys but there is a good chance they could be.

That's about 50 yards from my house!

Certainly age and style, and once the word private is added they are no longer national.

Apart from the UDC this looks like a perfect pressed pre-Worboys sign, albeit the frame looks very new considering. However, UDC stands for Uttlesford (where?) District Council which was only created in 1974. Go figure. One of a pair.

This one in Manorbier looked like it was of an pre-Worboys age:

That goes in the pre-Worboys thread, you can crop it and post it from any photo hosting site. It's well known and been fully repainted.jgharston wrote: ↑Sun Sep 06, 2020 12:36 Where was I working on Friday? Ah, here:

Were it not for the fancy font I'd have put these two in Luton (there are three but all identical) in pre-Worboys, MOD issued their own versions but not sure this would pass.

I spotted these on the Manchester Ship Canal at Irlam Locks recently. The weathered arm-type sign says '300 FEET STOP', and several of its counterparts remain too.

Yes there are some of these at Latchford also. The wooden ‘stop’ signs have been around for some time and can be made out in old photos from the 50s / 60s.traffic-light-man wrote: ↑Tue Sep 08, 2020 11:24 I spotted these on the Manchester Ship Canal at Irlam Locks recently. Re: Council and private signs from pre-Worboys era
I've been along the Ship Canal via vessel fairly recently, but I can't remember if all the locks have them, nor was I looking out for them - I should think they probably do, though!Rambo wrote: ↑Tue Sep 08, 2020 19:37Yes there are some of these at Latchford also. There are plenty of pre-Worboys signs all over Shropshire, with Whitchurch and Ellesmere having quite a few nice examples, but they're all over the place around there. Probably Oswestry as well, but too many to photograph for me, and anyway, I'm on my way somewhere usually !

Royal Iris (otM) - nothing too interesting!
I can't say I did notice the BR container I'm afraid. Admittedly, I paid much more attention to the workings of the locks, sluices and bridges than I did the other things around and about.

Re: Council and private signs from pre-Worboys era
If the bridge access sign is on a road or path and not an actual waterway that's pre-Worboys. I looked on Google and it's apparently on the path beyond where their car could reach as there's a locked gate for traffic there.

Re: Council and private signs from pre-Worboys era
It's on the footpath that crosses the locks via the swing bridge, on the northern bank of the canal. I'm 99% sure it's private land, owned and operated by Peel Ports' Manchester Ship Canal operations.

Re: Council and private signs from pre-Worboys era
As long as it's not aimed at boats it counts whether the land is private or not. It's only the format which matters not where they put them.
Re: Council and private signs from pre-Worboys era
ah very good. i know this is slightly OT but here is the said container. Early British Railways freightliner probably from the 60's.traffic-light-man wrote: ↑Wed Sep 09, 2020 12:06Royal Iris (otM) - nothing too interesting!
