Re: Council and private signs from pre-Worboys era
That's pre-Worboys, made before 1933 when they became standardised. Anything using similar wording and that age will be valid.mark3evo wrote: ↑Sat Oct 10, 2020 22:51 Burnt house lane, near Tunbridge wells

Two nice ones I just discovered in a nearby cemetery

Not sure if this https://maps.app.goo.gl/GK63tAMFvppzJsZr6 is appropriate for this thread?
It must be reasonably old; it was in a bit better condition only a few years ago. Are the white (reflective?) circles of the same era ax the arrow?

Definitely old. Probably one for the pre worboys thread itself. I have captured them myself but somebody had applied a sticker over the arrow and i couldn't quite peel it off ! Although there is a sign there routing traffic around the town centre i think they may have been installed in the transporter bridge days which would have been the only route across the river at the time.Kevin Roads wrote: ↑Fri Jan 15, 2021 19:22 Not sure if this https://maps.app.goo.gl/GK63tAMFvppzJsZr6 is appropriate for this thread?

Thanks, Rambo, I'll put a copy in the PW thread, just to record it.
Yes, the sticker only appeared in the last 2 or 3 years approx. I think the sign also may have been painted white for some reason, as I'm sure the the arrow was black, albeit faded, until fairly recently as well.

This was taken mid last year. As you can see i failed to completely remove the said sticker !
Re: Council and private signs from pre-Worboys era
Waterloo Road (behind the camera) was the approach to the Transporter Bridge. I understand from old maps that the bridge approach was immediately to the left of the wall and sign. As such, if they're contemporary with the bridge then the arrow would have been accompanied by a sign telling traffic to go that way if they didn't want Widnes.

This one is a possibility. Although the gate is modern ish. The stop sign looks quite old and clearly used before the days of automatic barriers and wig wags at this swing bridge.
Re: Council and private signs from pre-Worboys era
The arrow is 100% pre-Worboys, and rare as hen's teeth. There was a left turn on a roundabout in east London till a few years ago, and another right arrow in a village in Derbyshire. Yours is sadly so faded it's almost impossible to read now but has survived regardless.
Re: Council and private signs from pre-Worboys era
Here's a nice one in Heybridge, just like new.
Update, I also found a perfect condition repainted turn right arrow near here. Posted in the pre-Worboys section.

Another combined road name with directions, perfect direction sign otherwise. I spotted it going through Knowle near Solihull.
Re: Council and private signs from pre-Worboys era
Amazingly I found a perfect repainted example later on in Essex posted in pre-Worboys signs.
Re: Council and private signs from pre-Worboys era
Apart from the initials at the top this is a classical p-W sign, Aylesbury Vale District Council have taken ownership of it though. Stoke Mandeville.

AVDC no longer exists. Buckinghamshire is now a unitary authority; I wonder if they'll replace the initials with their own.

I doubt they'd waste money doing that. There's still plenty of street names in Inner London naming pre-1965 boroughs such as this example!Chris Bertram wrote: ↑Mon Oct 11, 2021 08:38 AVDC no longer exists. Re: Council and private signs from pre-Worboys era
What mystifies me is like Uttlesford, AVDC and in fact all district councils weren't formed until 1974, replacing urban and rural ones. But this one seems far older than that.

Spotted this one a couple of years ago and finally remembered to take a pic of it today:
