Re: Manky Signs
Thanks for the reply and info, Rambo. I must confess that I only saw that large sign by chance as I had taken the wrong exit at the roundabout so had turned around and was approaching to rejoin.
Re: Manky Signs
Coming out of Alston on the A689, there is a very faded sign with the lettering nearly worn off where you can just make out Newcastle is 45 miles away. ( It's just to the left of the South Tynedale Railway).
Re: Manky Signs
Indeed, I'm surprised it wasn't replaced when the brown sign was installed for the South Tynedale Railway as it is worn out and not easy to read. Interestingly the pre war Cumberland County Council signs in the village are immaculate.James1978 wrote: ↑Sat Jul 10, 2021 17:37Not this one is it?

Re: Manky Signs
A couple of old no waiting signs. First one at the entrance to Weston Point docks, Runcorn. The second just round the corner along South Parade along with a blue bordered recycling sign which had 1991 on the back.

Re: Manky Signs
Looks to me that Staverton was patched, but the patch has been lostBeardy5632 wrote: ↑Sun Jul 04, 2021 22:43
Also on the A38 approaching the Metz Way lights is this. The airport hasn't been officially been called Staverton for nearly 30 years and there is also an worn away 40 repeater underneath.
Cheers!

Re: Manky Signs
seems like they just stuck on a new black arrow and red rectangle to this faded sign or that the red ring was the only part that faded since it's introduction abut 10Yrs ago.
Re: Manky Signs
I posted this one a few months back. I went that way again only yesterday and saw another one literally yards from it (the white one at the bottom).James1978 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 03, 2021 20:06 https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@54.47679 ... authuser=0
Saw this beauty on the A172 yesterday!

Re: Manky Signs
And another beauty near Thirsk (unlike the others I posted, this one remains):

Re: Manky Signs
And the signs themselves are fine but what about the arrows and junction number (was the 10 originally black numbers on a white background? Hard to tell!). Shocking for a major motorway junction anyway!

Remind me of this not far away at the M56 / M6 northbound slip https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.35183 ... authuser=0James1978 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 19, 2021 20:31 And the signs themselves are fine but what about the arrows and junction number (was the 10 originally black numbers on a white background? Re: Manky Signs
They've faded to the point they've inverted, I think. Original 1974 junction number panels, on gantries well past their best.James1978 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 19, 2021 20:31 And the signs themselves are fine but what about the arrows and junction number (was the 10 originally black numbers on a white background? Re: Manky Signs
A really manky 15mph sign along Cholmondeley Rd, Weston Point leading down to Rocksavage works. methinks a private installation from many moons ago.
Re: Manky Signs
Showing it's age in Tarvin, Cheshire. Note the patch and the odd spacing between M 6

Re: Manky Signs
This speed limit sign has continued to fade from when GSV passed so it now looks like a No Vehicles sign up until you're almost next to it.
Worst maintained signs on the road network
I got to thinking how poorly maintained the signs are on the A601(M), I mean just look at how horrible this one is - https://www.google.com/maps/@54.1381609 ... 312!8i6656
It made me wonder how many other horrible signs there are out there on the road that really should have been updated and replaced literally decades ago. One other example I can think of are the poorly designed A74(M) signs where the motorway number patches can easily be removed to reveal "M6" underneath, and the fact that some signs still indeed refer to the motorway as the M6....
What examples can anyone else think of?
