I live in eternal hope that the next phase will cover J11-12 and then extend through to the A3(M) junction, and maybe even further east towards Chichester - this is already pseudo-motorway standard, and there is adequate alternate NMU provision in the form of the A259 (the old A27)

Re: M27 smartification
Didn’t they get their fingers burnt with the A14 in that they didn’t (or still don’t) have approval for VSL on non-motorways? I can’t see the A27 sections being sorted anytime soon to be honest
M27 Smart Motorway J4 to j11
I drove this yesterday and J4 to J7 seems completed apart from detection technology, same issue as with M4 J12 to 8/9. but what I noticed is there is no concrete barrier along here and it is all normal metal barrier. I though that all smart motorways had to have a concrete barrier?
Secondly why stop at J11, from my experience the really busy section is J11 to J12 and this is staying as D3 with HS except for the short sections of crawler lanes.
As with the M4 some junctions are 4 lane ALR some are lane drops namely J9 and J5, why not 4 ALR all the way through?

Re: M27 smartification
I drove it yesterday and there's still some finishing to do. Extra refuges are being built, which are still at the excavation stage. The new signs will now have to be updated! The inside lane has gaps in the top layer, but there are signs for 'technology testing'. I was hoping the middle lanes on the concrete section would have their longitudinal joints filled, but that's not looking likely as the white lines have been painted. One large new sign east bound somewhere in the middle, was saying (I think) no hard shoulder for 4 miles, which struck me as odd!

There is a separate repair programme due to start ahead of resurfacing of the concrete with asphaltB4444 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 14, 2022 18:57 I drove it yesterday and there's still some finishing to do. Re: M27 smartification
. . . but not until 2023! Does that mean the barriers will need to be raised, or are the current 'new' ones too high? I remember when the A27 Emsworth concrete bypass was resurfaced, the new surface started to break up. You also get the rollercoaster effect over the bridges!
Re: M27 smartification
First section of M27 Smartification from J4 opened on Friday 18th Feb, with a blanket 60mph limit in place.

Re: M27 smartification
Went through there today. Glad to see it open.
The long slip road looks weird now, the M3 junction looks better

Re: M27 smartification
Sadly a fatality on the M3/J14 to M27(W) slip, overnight.
A recovery operator, working on a broken down car was hit, and fatally injured.
But as he was on the hard shoulder, this is merely a footnote in the local news

Re: M27 smartification
I was on the newly complete section late Saturday evening, for some reason I thought the visibility of the exact start of the eastbound off slip at Jn 7 was poor. Just seemed wrong, I’ll need to have another look to try and explain why…

It is a shame that lightening has not been reinstalled between Junctions 7 & 8 as it was before.
Re: M27 smartification
Lighting tends to be removed from motorways these days, certainly when upgrade or refurbishment work is carried out.GeekyJames wrote: ↑Wed Feb 23, 2022 18:39 It is a shame that lightening has not been reinstalled between Junctions 7 & 8 as it was before.

Agreed it was removed from J10 to J12 and J7 to J8/9 on the M4, but at least they have reinstated it out to past J7, which I was surprised withChris5156 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 24, 2022 13:18Lighting tends to be removed from motorways these days, certainly when upgrade or refurbishment work is carried out.GeekyJames wrote: ↑Wed Feb 23, 2022 18:39 It is a shame that lightening has not been reinstalled between Junctions 7 & 8 as it was before.

Re: M27 smartification
Why not do it at the same time as the smartification. They have / are resurfacing the whole of the M4 from j3 to J12, given the extraordinary cost of Traffic Management, how much would have been saved doing it together?BenMcr wrote: ↑Fri Jan 14, 2022 19:02There is a separate repair programme due to start ahead of resurfacing of the concrete with asphaltB4444 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 14, 2022 18:57 I drove it yesterday and there's still some finishing to do. Back in 2018 HE released a statement saying the concrete was still fit for purpose, so wasn't part of the SM works, but would look at low noise surfacing after completion of the works.A303Chris wrote: ↑Thu Feb 24, 2022 13:40Why not do it at the same time as the smartification. Re: M27 smartification
Any idea why there seems to be a permanent 60MPH limit on the newly opened smart section of the M27? It looks completely finished, no sign of any construction equipment or workers.

Re: M27 smartification
This seems to be the norm... it allows for bedding in and monitoring of all equipment
Of course, it *may* be a new policy on new stretches of SM as part of the "stock-take"
