Auckland floods

Post by Big Nick »

There was a major storm over New Zealand this week and much of the North Island was flooded.

One bit that struck me was the Coromandel road wash out, this is State Highway 25 and it's likely to take over a year to rebuild.

Today there was a serious rockfall in the area. Glad nobody was underneath it! https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/131125 ... -peninsula

Two of the team from JetLag the Game, a spin off from Wendover Productions, have been caught in Auckland because of this. Auckland Airport had to shut due to flooding.

The weather is so bad here in the Auckland area that we were seriously considering abandoning our trip to the North Island earlier this morning. The wind & rain here (Waiheke Island to be precise) just seems to be relentless, and it sounds like it's been like this since the middle of December. It's only because of the superstorm last weekend that things have got really bad here.

Fortunately, after a couple of conversations with people that we're staying with further on down the track, we're going to stick with it, and hope that things pick up a bit. The weather is apparently a lot warmer and drier elsewhere on the island, so I really hope that the next few days don't continue to feel like a very wet weekend in somewhere like Portree or Stornoway ...

Cyclone Gabrielle is due to arrive on the North Island on Sunday evening, so there could be some even worse weather heading this way. A combination of heavy rain & strong winds could be absolutely devastating for a huge area around Auckland.

Fingers firmly crossed that the storm misses us ...
