Chopped Street Lamps Holding Signs

Post by Andmoreagain96 »

Hi All apologies if there is a thread already on this, quite new to the forum;

This is on Benton Road in Newcastle, a former lamp in the middle of a roundabout which has been cut back, but the remainder still holds the arrow signs:

There are a few similar roundabouts in the surrounding area in varying state of lamp/lamp stub/no lamp at all.

Is there any more examples of this with the bottom part of a former lamp acting as a signpost of sorts?

Thanks.

Here in Great Lister Street, Birmingham, a traffic signal is mounted on the stump of a street lamp.

These were the original columns which were chopped when newer ones were added. You can see the original light blue colour where the paint is flaking.

This one nearby was replaced a few years ago, but the CCTV camera sill remains so they just removed the bracket.

About 4 years ago quite a few of the columns on the A2 at Eltham were cut down. There's a few that were chopped slightly higher to keep the signs intact.

This one in Ramsgate was chopped because half the base has rusted out, but the unreadable notice that was originally attached to it remains, as does remains of something that a local business probably added.

This stump used to have a rather large lantern on it identical to this one

A38 passing Patchway (north of Bristol towards Almondsbury) presumably use to have some central reservation double armed MA50s/60s until I guess around 2014/2015 with it's LED replacement right from Almondsbury through to Filton/North Horfield (SGC/BCC boundary) some central reservation but some verge mounted with some former central reservation posts chopped high to retain the signs like here.

That's a Cohen Brothers column - many of these were hastily chopped down after two blew over in the wind and killed someone in the north east of England. They are functionally identical to Stewart and Lloyd columns except for the doors.

There used to be one in Stockport on the A6 when the columns were replaced but one of them was cut down & kept to hold up a sign.

Then and now on the Norwich ring road. It appears to have been truncated and the new lighting put up between August 2011 and June 2012

It seems strange if it was cut off purely because of the sign which was replaced anyway.

The blue bordered sign plate was replaced before the column was cut looking at the old GSV images.
