The northbound RCS seems to be no longer in situ.
Also this is possible a nice hark back to the days of the B519 North Hill being the Great North Road.

Re: Out of date road signs
In 1982 the then London Docklands Development Corporation persuaded Asda to build new supermarkets in the old Docklands (basically by giving them the land at a trivial rent) as a very first stage of redevelopment. Three were built, of which two remain. Being in obscure areas they needed signposting. Most of these have now gone with later developments, but one in the Isle of Dogs remains

We don't say "Superstore" any more, it's not in fact that super now, and the road it was signing down at the time, East Ferry Road, now had a pedestrianised section, so an unsigned dogleg is needed. I wonder how long it will be there.
We also don't say "Docklands" any more, the old organisation is long gone, and if you want an accepted destination name now it would be "Canary Wharf". But TfL have not caught up, with signing on the A406 North Circular still using the old expression.

So how would you describe the area from Limehouse to Beckton, incl Isle of Dogs and North Greenwich. Docklands is/was much bigger that just The Canary Wharf Estate.WHBM wrote: ↑Tue Sep 26, 2023 21:54 ...

You are of course correct, and for years I used to say "Docklands", but gradually the term fell out of use, not least that people stopped recognising where it was.
I've long felt it a lost opportunity that the old LDDC, at the end, was not converted into a local authority, given how different its area ended up compared to the various boroughs it was spread across.
Re: Out of date road signs
I agree Docklands feel different to the surrounding area, a separate LA would have been a good idea but I suspect politics rather than common sense dictated that the areas returned to their original boroughs.WHBM wrote: ↑Sun Oct 01, 2023 19:37You are of course correct, and for years I used to say "Docklands", but gradually the term fell out of use, not least that people stopped recognising where it was.

Re: Out of date road signs
There's still the Docklands Light Railway & a few other things in the area with Docklands in the name.
Beware of the trickster on the roof
Re: Out of date road signs
Oh, the authorities would have gone ballistic, notwithstanding their long term dislike, and worse, of the Docklands schemes. Tower Hamlets council is still apoplectic about now having Conservative councillors there, it was wall-to-wall Labour before.
The Docklands Light Railway is now pretty universally known as the DLR, even its official signage and logo has changed over, and I guess many of its riders don't know what the initials stand for. I'll do a test !

Re: Out of date road signs
TH LBC seems currently to have one Tory councillor, one Green, nineteen Labour and twenty-four from the Aspire group, which is a Bangladeshi caucus aligned with convicted electoral fraudster Lutfur Rahman, who is once again mayor having served his time being excluded from office. Tower Hamlets politics are a messy affair, to say the least.WHBM wrote: ↑Sun Oct 01, 2023 22:28Oh, the authorities would have gone ballistic, notwithstanding their long term dislike, and worse, of the Docklands schemes. The Aspire group, who are Bangladeshi and muslim, managed the remarkable feat of having only male councillors elected. This has not gone unnoticed by other political groupings who will no doubt try to make some political points about it.

Re: Out of date road signs
"Superstore" is still the legend for such developments, given TSRGD does not allow advertising on such signs. As it has a blue border it should've been taken down 9 years ago when the saving expired but no-one is religiously (and arguably with good reason as we have far worse things to worry about than surviving blue borders on signs) following that.

This local road sign in Billericay, Essex. Very old; probably mid to late 1970s. What makes this sign seriously out of date is the inclusion of "Buttsbury". Buttsbury was wiped out as a village after the great plague. There was a council ward in the Basildon district between 1973 and 1979 bearing the same name, and there is a school on Perry Street called Buttsbury Junior. Looking at old maps it looks like the area was mostly rural up until the end of the 70s at least when the Queens Park development was built. If anyone local knows anything more ...I assumed it was just a wrong direction as if you want to get to Buttsbury Ford you'd need to go down Mountnessing Road not Perry Street

Peter Golds has been a councillor since the early days of LDDC developments brought in a different social group. Of course, his background is anathema to some others. This interview with him is from a while ago. He's still here

Re: Out of date road signs
Indeed, but the point is that he's on his own. The rise of an ethno-religious group in the form of Aspire is of course deeply regrettable, but the answer is for opposing forces to organise against them more effectively. Otherwise Tower Hamlets will forever become an outpost of Bangladeshi internal politics.WHBM wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2023 19:00Peter Golds has been a councillor since the early days of LDDC developments brought in a different social group. Re: Out of date road signs
I saw some hypermarket signs in the 80's and 90's such as the Savacentre in Oldbury and the Asda in Minworth. Hypermarket seems to have gone out of use now given the fact the many regular supermarkets tend to be on the large side.MotorwayGuy wrote: ↑Mon Oct 09, 2023 18:48It's not the only one"Nathan_A_RF wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2023 14:32 So when was "Hypermarket" allowed, if ever it was?

Re: Out of date road signs
Indeed the Sydenham example was originally branded as Savacentre but was changed to the regular branding in the mid 2000s. I seem to recall the ASDA in Basildon being referred to as a "Hypermarket" but the branding was along the lines of "Walmart Supercentre", so maybe it was a somewhat authorised term at some point.Truvelo wrote: ↑Mon Oct 09, 2023 19:52I saw some hypermarket signs in the 80's and 90's such as the Savacentre in Oldbury and the Asda in Minworth. In Bexleyheath, the old signs actually said "ASDA", along with "Superbowl" and "Swallow Hotel", but the newer signs use the usual generic terms.
