Motorways into the west and southwest of London

Were there ever plans for an M23 say, reaching the South Circular? It seems like even in the ringways era it would have been impossible for any kind of motorway or grade seperated road to enter the southern half of London. Same with the M3

But not the A3 which goes well into Richmond but within 200 metres of this point it only one carriageway in each direction - a glaring example of a planning about-turn.

Actually the A3 was planned to plough through Wandsworth town centre, documented elsewhere on Roads.org.uk as linked above
