Here's a few examples of old/interesting signs I spotted during my trip through Ireland recently.

Great photo of the odd pre-90s numerals on Irish signs, plus the different lower-case design. Not quite Transport is it.

It was odd seeing what was (to me) a sign with both primary patching and flat-topped 3s.

That's actually quite a surprise. The slanted Irish font came in about the same time as transport started to be used for numbers.

When did Irish start to be used on Irish signs?? From day 1 (in the Free State government), or later??

My judgement is the numerals are pinched from the MOT font, whilst the unusual ‘small letters’ are a variant on regular Transport.

A bit like you get an ‘educational’ variant of some fonts that have some fully-rounded letters (mainly a’s, g’s and y’s) to closely mimic handwriting.

Well systematic use started with S.I. No. 55/1926 - Road Signs and Traffic Signals Regulations, 1926.

Rare example from 1933, Irish is somewhat less prominent than the English, which wouldn't be allowed nowadays.

This is 1960s style directional signage on the Longmile Road in Dublin. The road here isn't in great shape because it was intended to dual it and in those days (and maybe even now) Irish local authorities did not put their best efforts into a road that was going to be dug up in a year or two, even if it actually took 8 or 10 years to make the improvement.
This district is known today for motor dealers, the shiny showroom type, the vans and trucks, and some Irish cousins of Arthur Daley with Japanese second hand imports with a dodgy trail through Dubai.

Do any other pictures of these Dublin Orbital Route signs exist? I know only 50 out of 500 were ever installed before they were scrapped by the DoT, so it's quite unlikely.

Not quite, that is the 2020 style of such signage. The one in the picture is 2002 style, when the orbital route first "opened", but they were heavily criticised for not being particularly useful (only route and junction numbers were shown, as well as An Lár, with no English translation, on account of saving space) and no DoT approval. The inner orbital route's signage was coloured orange in the first design, before being changed to a light blue in the 2003 design.
