BBC: £24m Dyfi Bridge plans go on show at Machynlleth

Well the bridge should be opening today (Around lunchtime I believe). Annoyingly I'm in work so can't go down today, but might pop down over the weekend to have a nose.

Indeed, as I have said many times, new roads in themselves are not the problem - it is new roads that are designed to just create yet more driving trips to giant shed developments that are. Rural areas rely on good roads that don't close every time there's a drop of rain. See also the A83.

The WG needs to realise this distinction when it applies a blanket ideology - I had thought their "safety/connectivity" exemptions would be enshrined.

I agree. But also, private transport is the way the large majority of people get to work and engage in social activities. Journeys to sheds represent a small proportion. And in most cases, these journeys to work and for social purposes are not to inner urban areas where public transport or active travel are viable.

If you look carefully there's a junction just before the railway bridge for a small industrial estate, so I guess the early 20mph is for that. As for opening with a 30 I'm not sure what the thinking is there, as the 30 signs are all temporary

As an aside, the major drainage works on the A493 were Completed 10 Days ahead of schedule and the route has been fully open for about a week.

I used the new A493/A487 junction for the first time last week. When turning right from the A493 the traffic from the A487 north comes round a bend in the road at a high speed so you need to be quite sharp pulling out. The A493/A470 junction at the top of the A493 coastal loop was converted to a roundabout and I think that would have been a good option here. As a positive, the new viaduct is impressive.

Here's a video of the finished bridge with traffic on it from March 24. When I drove through last Friday the speed limit across the bridge was still 30. Presumably, this is because the contractors are still working on converting the old bridge into a pedestrian/cycle path so at the moment people on foot or cycling are forced to use the new bridge.

Given the 20 limit at the end of the viaduct a roundabout may well have been a good transition - I foresee there's going to be some big overtakes on the straight across the bridge, the sightlines are great for that. The 50 limit is due to the presence of the footway I think, rather than anything else.
