Severn beach traffic lights

Post by Tom Williams »

All,

I was walking round the Severn beach/Pilning area yesterday, and came across a pedestrian crossing with raised buttons for cyclists, since this crossing happens to be on a cycle path. I know of no other arrangements like this, apart from those very similar and rare equestrian crossings. I did also notice some concrete steps near to the crossing which I presume are for cyclists to rest on when waiting to cross. https://www.google.com/maps/@51.5552556 ... &entry=ttu

There's signs at the crossing pointing to 'public bridleway', so the high level push buttons are undoubtedly intended for horse riders.

It's a bit of a strange set up without there actually being a dedicated equestrian crossing and ultimately a botch, unless the intention is that the riders dismount, walk across and remount after the crossing using the mounting blocks, though this would then remove the need for the high level buttons by virtue of them not being on the horse when using the crossing.

Looks like a very early effort at a Pegasus crossing, before the details had been worked out.
