Also A46 Coventry Junctions was split in two. Binley Flyover has been completed for about 18 months, but Walsgrave hasn't even got to DCO yet.
Let it snow.

I am keen to the A66 dualling be completed by the end of the next government's term in office( 2028 or 2029), and even though the road passes through two safe Conservative seats, I would hope it doesn't fall victim to party politics if Labour win. Mind you, living in what will be the Whitehaven and Workington seat, which will probably fall to Labour, I am hoping consideration is given to two projects that have been under discussion since the noughties- the A597 Workington southern by pass( plans drawn up in 2008, then scrapped) and for an often mentioned A595 Whitehaven by pass, which will be tight to build, but still doable. Both roads are completely snarled up with traffic and the A595 from Parton to Bigrigg is terrible at peak times.

Re the A47 schemes, as of 4 April 2024:

"Highways bosses have confirmed that work on three major safety schemes on the A47 has slowed to a virtual standstill due to an environmental campaigner's latest legal challenge.

National Highways officials say the construction work on the projects has been paused, with just 'pre-construction' activities ongoing, until the result of Dr Andrew Boswell's most recent crowd-funded appeal is known.

The former Green councillor has already seen his case thrown out by the High Court and the Court of Appeal, where judges described it as having "no logical basis" and "an air of complete unreality".

However, he has now applied for permission to appeal to the Supreme Court.................."

Has the Supreme Court ruled whether it will hear the case? I can't find anything to suggest it has.

So I think it could be argued that these schemes technically belong in the "one star" category - albeit that preparatory work is taking place.

Simister going ahead would help Burnham achieve some of his active travel credentials as fixing this mess will remove several roads from people's rat run lists. Would be foolish for Starmer to screw over a Labour mayor.

Likewise West Mids schemes will likely be seen as crucial to deliver.

Do we know how many well progressed schemes were cancelled in 1997, especially schemes that had cleared the planning process? Had any even started preparatory works?

We've all seen the long list of cancelled schemes, but there's a big difference between taking an item off a wishlist and binning something shovel ready.

There is detail of the cancellations in November 1995 at https://hansard.parliament.uk/Commons/1 ... edSchemes)

I've not found a list of the 1997 cancellations but the Schemes still in the programme in 1997 are at https://api.parliament.uk/historic-hans ... -programme

So my question is how many of those 100+ cancelled schemes actually had planning consent? I'm guessing not many?

If 18 schemes actually went ahead this time like 1998 that would actually be really good! There's only 23 on my list above, and some like Arundel, Worthing, Southfields, and Port of Liverpool are already effectively on hold.

So maybe 1997/1998 isn't quite the disaster it's depicted as, but more like the Conservatives getting called on having an absurdly long list they weren't realistically going to build. This time their list seems more realistic so maybe it's more survivable?

Is that the dread hand of optimism on my shoulder? [shudders]

It also goes through Tim Farron's Lib Dem seat (marginal last time), and the Bishop Auckland seat which was one of the most surprising red wall seats to go Tory last time and an almost certain Labour win this time. Even Penrith and Solway, one of the "safe" Tory seats on the A66 Scotch Corner to Penrith route would take only a 13% swing to go Labour this time, well within the realms of possibility on current polling. So I think all three main parties in England have a significant local electoral interest in this scheme.

Nearly all of the dualling scheme will sit in the new Westmorland and Lonsdale seat which is likely to be Lib Dem, Only Junction 40 to Frenchfield Will sit in Penrith and Solway.

I too worry that it will be a victim to party politics, decisions made by people that don't have to use the road regularly.

If it doesn't go ahead, be prepared for long lengths of average speed cameras.
