Even more French Road Photos...

Post by Bryn666 »

Hi all,

102 of 3000 photos online this time around. They're of the same region I went to last summer, so you may recognise the route. Captions shall follow later, but for now:

Hope these interest some people

Hi there, I don't have the online space!

However, if you're interested, I have some photos of the N227 online

Here's a question from an English-speaker (but not native) guy (hence, me).

Do we rather say "pictures" or "photos"?

 stupid question one might think, but French people teaching English in school always use "photo"...

You can use both. English is a funny language when it comes to multiple meanings for the same word.

Mind, our one saving grace is that our words don't have a complex gender structure, so no "le" and "la" for us to learn

Good question.

"Photo" is specifically taken by camera - "picture" can be taken by camera, or drawn, or painted, or whatever.

Note that you *take* a photo, you do not *make* one - that's a common mistake among foreigners and, if you get it right, you'll sound like a native!

Good luck!

Intresting to see that the French 'End of Motorway' sign is exactly the same as the British one.

It's identical across Europe except some countries use a elongated version - as France did until the 90s. Some countries use a green background instead.

Coming across the sign for the end of a road for motor vehicles only (crossed out "happy car") can be disconcerting to the uninitiated driver in France, as it might be construed to mean "no cars"

(yes, I know it's square and not round)

After driving in France my favoirite sign on the autoroute was the autoroute interchange one - whenever 2 crossed it always seemed to be a free flow link rather than our obscession with roundabouts - we could learn from this ;)

Let's just not talk about the new expressway-motorway junctions, OK ?
