Can you identify these?

Post by Rojojnr »

Hi all, sorry for the long absence from SABRE - had university and other commitments to contend with! Whilst on my usual adventures on Google Maps, I stumbled across these unfamiliar new SON lanterns which have been installed on the A2 near Canterbury. Similar installations can also be found on the A20 at Dover:

They look like a curious combination of a Davis GR70 (the older model), a Thorn Alpha 8 and an SGS203, which makes me think they may be a new Thorn/Philips model. Any ideas?

Plus, I also found some relics dotted about:

This Revo Horizon on South Street in Romford is now the only one on this road - the next column along on the left has an Iridium installed on the same type of bracket, which makes me think there used to be another one at this junction until recently!

I've known about this one for some time now, but forgot to show it to you guys! Also on South Street, just a bit further along from the Revo Horizon, is this single surviving Eleco SR305 which I believe to be from the 60s. I think this whole section of road used to be lit by them, as there are some identical installations behind that have been retrofitted with SGS203s.

Another installation identical to the above, but on Petersfield Avenue in Harold Wood. This is one of two (the other one is two columns down on the same side). I would think this section was originally lit with SR305s as surrounding installations have been casually retrofitted over the years by a variety of Philips SGSs.

Lighting the entrance to this derelict 1970s car park are two GEC Turtles on some extremely rusty Fabrikat columns. These look like council installations as they're painted in Havering's white and green outfit, but I'm extremely surprised that they haven't been replaced by now! I think, however, this site may be up for demolition due to the proximity of the Asda development opposite and all the town centre refurbishment that's been going on for the last few years, so these two great survivors' days could well be numbered!

This Z8430 has been due for replacement for ages (Thanet hasn't used P678s now for at least 5 years, as the Arc is now the lantern of choice) but it's still standing, although I think the P678 is very much in service by now! A rare find indeed!

A great scene here of some GR150s on some unusual sleeve brackets in St Andrew's Avenue, Colchester!

An unbroken row of three Alpha 1s here on Cowdray Road in Colchester.

Saving the best till last, here's a complete double bracket installations of Thorn Alpha 6s (which somebody has pictured on here somewhere), also on St Andrew's Avenue in Colchester.
I now have a new Sony H50 digital camera, so expect a big improvement in my photos from now on!
