Great Straight Roads - N157 Le Mans to Orléans

Post by AAndy »

80 odd miles of dead straight road, with the odd town or village mucking up the linear joy. The N157 is not exceptional in any other way really. The odd grain silo livens up the otherwise mostly flat agricultural landscape, with much of the countryside being farmed for wheat and corn.
The last time I drove it, there was only one speed camera, just around 10 miles from the centre of Le Mans.
But the sight of the road being straight for mile after mile is a joy....a great experience and an interesting alternative to using the motorways to traverse the country.

Amazing roads off autoroutes in France.

Of course, such roads encourage liberal use of the right foot and thus are deathtraps, especially when you get mad overtakes around tractors and such...

The worst ones have the huuuuge dips in valleys while being ruler straight through it - impossible to see any upcoming hazards at all, but doesn't stop traffic driving at 80mph. Unless there's a radar automatique nearby of course!

even some of the autoroute's are amazing!!!......

France does have a bad accident rate yet I've never come accross anything worst than what I experience here!!!

On the plus point the roads over there are maintained to a much superior standard than the UK's.

And they are comparitively deserted :D

The most dangerous driving I've encountered has been on the autoroutes that lead to germany, where countless ton-up + drivers EXPECT you to get out the way.
