There's a chance it's a closely spaced unidirectional loop, too, though it might just be a fair few recuts overlapping. Most around here are U/D, either loops or mags, though there's definitely some that use a long call delay like WhiteBlueRed mentions.

This one is unique.
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.50664 ... 384!8i8192
Loads of private accesses onto the road, each with a full size and also a low level signal, so each access has two signals for redundancy.
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.50596 ... 384!8i8192 This access however has two full size ones on the same pole next to each other (not Street view error)
Looks like the road was two-way before the path was widened to allow bicycles.
I wonder if each private access is on its own phase, or all of them go green at the same time - because of the controlled flow i'd imagine it to be the first, but would add 20 seconds red time to the other directions for each private access.
Plus there would be a conflict between those cycling and walking on the footway and those coming out of the private accesses

Why would they site two heads on one pole for that private access? Those two signal heads look like they'd light up the living room of the house opposite if the alignment wasn't very carefully controlled. Perhaps they can indicate directions independently, but if so why does the other side not have the same... All rather odd.

Every entry to a signal controlled junction needs at least two signal heads, in case one fails. Usually they are positioned on opposite sides of the road or diagonally opposite corners of the junction, but there's nothing to say they can't be next to each other. To achieve that, all the other private accesses on that length have a pole right by the driveway holding one full-size signal head and one miniature one, but this one access is unusual in having no pole sited adjacent to it.

My guess is that they've tried to be as economical as possible. Other private accesses are on their own, so there's no avoiding giving them their own signal pole, but this one is located opposite another driveway. As a result they've used one pole to host all four of the necessary signals, but since it is necessarily on the wrong side of the street for one driveway, a miniature signal is unsuitable so it has to have two full size signals for that approach.

Thanks for the explanation, makes sense. I didn't think those smaller heads were legal for motorised traffic, I thought those were only appropriate for cyclists. That, at least, appears to be how they are applied outside of this particular example. Is there an exemption for this type of circumstance (infrequently used, low hazard?)

I don't know, actually - it's an interesting question. This is of course in Wales so different rules may apply!

Interesting that they expend the effort to give the farm a signal, but don't do the same for the pub's car park exit, which could quite possibly have more traffic.

It has one, it's just behind the pub. Possibly a unique site in that sense, too!

Well, that is quite interesting. Of course there are nerds like us, on Google reviews who post pictures of this kind of thing.

Thats a crazy amount of cycles for such a small road  I assume the owners of the pub would have been consulted when that were installed.

Is it the rule that there must be two signals for each a access? As a lot of the examples only have one. Or did rules change?

That site, by the way, is glorious.

I was wondering the same thing. The "main lines" have two signals each but the private properties don't. Best guess is there's an exemption for very infrequently used accesses, but if so, why did it not apply in Wales...

Here's some better photos from The Junction in Rainford.

Regarding the two heads - there's a legal requirement for any signalised movement of general traffic (trying to word that in a way that makes sense) on the public highway to have two lanterns. The secondary must not contain less information than the primary, but may contain more (again, plenty of botched of that kicking around if you get technical). Obvious exceptions are pedestrians, cycles and trams.

I think the single head for a driveway probably stems from the fact that they're not seen as an approach on the public highway and so aren't enforceable anyway - so why not use less equipment and improve the practicalities around siting the equipment. Typically in Merseyside, only one lantern was used for the private access, and these are plentiful. In Lancashire, on the other hand, it was normal for them to use two lanterns and paint a stop line, presumably to try and make them enforceable (and perhaps successfully so - I'm not sure it's a tried and tested subject matter), but you can end up with some messy looking arrangements doing this for starters, but it can also generate a lot of heat from the residents who don't like a RAG sining through their windows at night, especially on LED sites.

I'm not sure if this one's been mentioned before (apologies if it has), but I spotted it when walking to Hereford Hospital to have an injection in my left eye :( . It's the exit from the Texaco Service Station on Commercial Road.

Try this beast a whole right turn lane just for a private access and it's own phase and the other road has an ahead arrow for it too.

This set up here is kinda simiar, however is quirky in other ways.
* Has a stop sign and a traffic signal - so can you do a left turn on red if you stop?
* Opposite is a pub & driveway sharing the same solo signal.
* On the other side of the bridge there is a pelican crossing

If we're doing international examples now, a house along Slaughter Road here in Huntsville has a signal facing its driveway.

Whitesburg Baptist Church also has a pair of signals protecting the entrance to their parking lot from Whitesburg Drive. The same goes for Holy Spirit Catholic Church over on Airport Road.

I will admit, I am trying to avoid posting locations where the traffic lights protect the entrances/exits of businesses, given how common those tend to be here in the US and I ain't entirely sure if they qualify for the thread. Another one I ain't entirely sure qualifies, given that it's for a (city) government facility, would be these signals on Clinton Avenue that protect one of the entrances of Huntsville's Traffic Engineering Department facility.
Probably busy documenting grade crossings in the southeastern United States.
