Unequal double streetlight brackets

Post by Truvelo »

The unequal brackets on the M5 near J4a are well known among Sabristi but are there any others in the UK? I saw some on the way to Detroit a few weeks ago but other than the M5 ones I don't know of any more over here.

The first picture shows the M5 ones with longer brackets on the outside curve. The second picture shows the American ones with longer brackets on the inside.

Those M5 examples are lovely. Truly one of the last of they're kind I suspect, certainly in they're number.

A few columns with odd brackets do exist here, on the A568. I'm reasonably sure there's about half a dozen a little further north on this curve, here, also.

My memory may be incorrect, but something tells me a few used to exist on the A55 in North Wales in the early nineties. Certainly long gone now if that’s the case. If not the A55, I certainly recall a few near to the A55 (Holywell / Colwyn Bay?) somewhere at that time. Unfortunately, I can't be more precise.

No others spring to mind at the moment.

There used to be these on the A361 near Barnstaple, but IIRC they've all gone now.

There's many examples of having mismatched lanterns on double brackets, but I am struggling to think of any other unequal brackets.

The A47 in Peterborough was relit a year or two ago but the other Parkways still have their 40 year old lanterns :)

The A557 has a massive ammount, the majority being very short on one side and standard on the other.

I have thought of some more, on the A639 at Stourton in Leeds (between the Royal Mail depot and M1 J44).

Some nice examples on the Norf Serklar of imbalanced double brackets attempting to illuminate both the carriageway and a pedestrian area...

...and another that puts SON firmly in its place :D this is also on the Norf Serk but further east, pic taken heading west:

I remember seeing some in Lancashire the other week... Unequal brackets with SON lanterns lighting the carriageway, and white light lanterns lighting a footpath... It was somewhere between Carnforth and Preston as I recall(not entirely useful directions!)

Could it have been in the Garstang area? I'm sure I've seen these somewhere but can't think where?

Possibly... I was hurtling past on a pendolino so at the time I couldn't work out where I was!

I know a couple of pairs of Philips 'Trafficvision' SGS 306's that have unequal brackets. These are in Chepstow, at the English/Welsh border.

Those aren't brackets of different lengths, they are brackets of the same length with different sized lanterns.

Is that on the part of the A639 that runs alongside the M1, or is it south of J44, because I've never noticed any unequal brackets on that stretch.

The bit alongside the M1, between J44 and the Royal Mail centre. I'm pretty sure there's a few that are slightly longer on one side than the other.
