Euro-inspired replacements?

Post by autosignguy »

I was passing through Liverpool the other night and was surprised to see these columns:

(image from wallasey's site)

I thought they looked more like what you see in Spain than on a British street. Saying that, has anyone here ever seen British-style lighting outside the UK [excluding Ireland]? (apart from Holland, obviously, since that's Phillips and WRTL's home turf, isn't it?)

I can honestly say I haven't seen very much British-style lighting when I've been abroad...

There used to be Thorn Alpha 4s in Toronto of all places...

Australia and New Zealand use a lot of British style lanterns too.

They look quite normal really. They'd be more continental if they were on curved arch poles, which are very rare in the UK, used only in Sheffield and Milton Keynes centre and also were used occasionally in the 70s.

LB Lewisham and Lambeth like them on their main roads too.

The one's in Sheffield do seem slightly different and no doubt much newer, but Leicester has tons like those in Lewisham/Lambeth and Chesterfield has quite a few too.

EDIT: Glasgow also has some.

It's the height of the Liverpool ones that makes them seem very Continental for a British road; at least for a quiet side avenue like that one.

Saying that, Liverpool does have some Sheffield-style lanterns down by the docks, and Warrington with its Petitjean columns
(although these have Philips MI series lanterns if I remember rightly!)
