It was a "no entry" symbol as when first built the ahead carriageway was a stump awaiting the connection to what is now the A46. Also must be a contender for one of the oldest surviving motorway signs.

It was a "no entry" symbol as when first built the ahead carriageway was a stump awaiting the connection to what is now the A46. Also must be a contender for one of the oldest surviving motorway signs.

Note also how the "00” of "A4600" are clearly later additions, as A46 still headed for the centre of Cov at this time.

Operations moving to the new Brandenburg Airport have probably seen to the latter.

As for the gantry itself it seems it is just the UK where nuclear bunker sized structures are still able to be demolished by anything bigger than a feather duster crashing through a standard corrugated beam barrier.

I snapped these pictures back in 2018, but, per street view, these classic pair of button-copy signs on US 31 on the southwest side of Montgomery, AL, are thankfully still there, as of this past June at least. I believe these are the only surviving examples of button-copy US Route and Alabama State Route shields in Alabama. Last I saw, I-65 southbound in downtown Birmingham still retained a trio of button-copy I-65 shields, the only button-copy Interstate shields left in Alabama (as the I-20/I-59 pair at "malfunction junction" were removed before I could snap a picture when the I-20/I-59 viaduct through downtown Birmingham was torn down and rebuilt years ago), but the southernmost of those had the sign it's on damaged so I have no idea if they are all still around.
