Don't think the bridge strike was the worst thing to happen here, especially as it stayed open with traffic diverting through Witham town centre to rejoin the A12: https://www.gazette-news.co.uk/news/240 ... nts-anchor

That said, this is the same bridge that was had temporary lights on it for at least eight years now after a previous collision. NH were still insistent they would fix the bridge at some point, despite its demolition in the next couple of years for the A12 widening and junction improvements. I wonder if they may now just leave it as it is until it's time for it to come down?

Unless there were some caveats around what counted and what didn't, the access road to Larkstone Beach in Ilfracombe - signed at 5ft - beats them?

In the last few months, this bridge had a make-over - it is now canary-yellow and next time the Google Car comes round, the camera lense might shatter due to the glare.

The canal bridge was signed as 1.3m / 4' 9", but some of the signs now say 1.3m / 4' 6". Not convinced it is as low as it claims and it is arched so I'm fairly sure taller vehicles fit through it. I think I should go and measure it...

The bridgebarrier at Dreghorn which was signed as 1.0m was raised to 1.5m and now doesn't have a height warning but looks lower than 1.0m. I'd love to know its backstory.

I can guarantee that drivers will still hit it as they didn't notice it was there. :bang:

If you look carefully, you will see that the bridge is "armour-plated" in the form of a 300 mm pipe across the front of the bridge. My knowledge of collisions tells me that is an over-sized vehicle does happen to colide with the pipe, the pipe will buckle, threby taking a good deal of impact, but will protect the track bed.

JUST [fruity words] CLOSE THE [more fruity words] BRIDGE, it's been bypassed. Closing the level crossing and routing everything under a 9ft bridge seems a bit of a fool's errand doesn't it.

The bridge carries the rail traffic over the road. Close it and then find yourself waiting for a train and are driving a car or light van you would not be best pleased, the height limit is hard to miss.

There is literally a brand new road that takes you around this bridge. There is NO reason for it to remain open to motorised traffic, and the level crossing has already been closed permanently.

WHen I was working in Germany, I saw a similar thing here. A level crossing about 300 metres to the south (beyond a railway station) had been closed and replaced by this bridge.

...the canal bridge (Harestanes Aqueduct) on Auchendavie Road varies in height. Sides vary from around 1.55m / 5' 1" to 1.80m / 5' 11". Centre varies from around 2.20m / 7' 3" to 2.40m / 7' 10". North portal is signed 4' 6" and is lower than south portal which is signed 4' 9". There was plenty of headroom when I drove my 1.5m / 4' 11" car through.

Not exactly a "bridge" strike, but on a similar theme, a bus crashed into a "low access" point in a building in central London. See here.

Looks like it ploughed into one of these shops, possibly while coming into a T-junction.

Bridges under 5'? I've been down disused mines with more headroom than that!

That’s not “bus driven into low thing”, that’s “bus driven into building”. Maybe a technical or medical issue rather than dopeyness or unobservance.

There's no excuse for keeping that road open to motorised traffic. I'm surprised Network Rail are still tolerating this now.

One of our trailers was involved in a bridge strike yesterday. An agency driver tried to negotiate a 13' bridge even though the trailer is 4.2m tall. The damage seems confined to the roof so as long as the frame isn't twisted it should be repairable.
