Ach, that'd be too sensibleRitchie333 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 06, 2024 10:23 I would have thought a better diversion route would be simply to go the other way round the M25 via the Dartford Crossing. Certainly for HGVs that make sense. And for overheight vehicles, divert via A3, M27 and M3.

Just popping in to remind that there are no tolls at Dartford. It’s a congestion charge. Although that does suggest that, if they are theoretically required to manage congestion at 'normal' times, then they must be even more required during the closure.Big L wrote: ↑Fri Mar 08, 2024 07:28Just popping in to remind that there are no tolls at Dartford. From a coldly rational point of view, focused only on the strategic road network, you could argue for an increase to maintain service levels for strategic traffic still requiring to use the M25!

I live near Hampton Court Bridge and that route is certainly NOT one I would use.John McAdam wrote: ↑Wed Mar 06, 2024 01:25
The designated diversion route (via A3, A245 and A320) can be seen on the M25 junction 10 project webpage.
The obvious diversions (i.e. the ones the locals would use) are much shorter, but will (I predict) will get jammed very quickly on Saturday and Sunday mornings, I even think that Walton Bridge and Hampton Court Bridge will get jammed.
I expect to be sitting at home on Saturday morning watching the chaos via the AA traffic map.
.
M25 closed this weekend
The M25 is closed between Jcts 10 and 11 this weekend: BBC News
The official diversion appears to be the A320, A245 and A3. There's not too much red on the Google Maps traffic layer yet if anyone wanted a sneaky look!

The diversion of long-distance/regional traffic onto local roads highlights the south-East’s complete reliance on one orbital road. A city-region the size of London would benefit from an additional outer orbital motorway.

Its been very well publicised, which is probably helping.

See the ringways plans for further info. Or the POLO proposal in more recent times. Discredited and abandoned. The M25 is itself part of two former proposed ringway routes. However much it might be needed, it's not happening. I don't make predictions and I never will but no more motorways will be built here. Full stop.

Very little congestion generally. Only Byfleet is busy but, it may be like that all the time. I've been to Brooklands Museum twice and the roads around there are always busy.
Wondering how many of the J10 and 11 lights are switched off, as some will be redundant, the closed M25 off/on slips.

Re: A3/M25 Wisley Upgrade
Just to add the cherry on it, the southbound Blackwall Tunnel, which can offer an alternative route for a number of longer-distance journeys (eg East London to Surrey), has been closed for the same weekend.
It's not particularly apparent where the works are - I saw reference to the removal of the Cockcrow footbridge, which is some distance away from the A3 junction.

Re: A3/M25 Wisley Upgrade
Apparently the M25 is closed (or at least some lanes closed) westbound between junctions 5 and 6 after an accident. That's probably helping the situation with the M25, putting a brake on traffic getting through to the fully-closed section. Unfortunately, it also means some avoidable queues, as this bit of the M26 / M25 is a long way without a junction to divert off.
Also, Google Maps traffic is reporting lane closures on the eastbound M3 at Fleet. Again, this is inadvertently managing the traffic flow towards the M25.

Despite all the media hype (which fair enough has probably served well to advise drivers to avoid the area) the M25 western section is so often snarled up, that many drivers are used to finding other ways round. Delays are probably worse when there's an unplanned closure folowing a crash.

Re: A3/M25 Wisley Upgrade
I was around the area on Sunday and travelled both ways on the M25 between the M40 and the M3. I have never seen it so quiet during daytime.
Let it snow.
Re: A3/M25 Wisley Upgrade
I agree - I passed through Wisley on the A3 and it was a ghost town. I haven't seen the queues so short since the roadworks started, and from what I could see the M25 was very unusually quiet too. People clearly decided to just stay home.Alderpoint wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2024 08:05 I was around the area on Sunday and travelled both ways on the M25 between the M40 and the M3. This is of course used as proof that if you just remove a road all the essential journeys will also be rescheduled to other means which is demonstrably false - no-one has successfully removed a genuinely strategic road (and not an unfinished spur or isolated city centre GSJ) yet. The fabled example in Seoul had numerous alternative motorways adjacent to it.
