Re: M25 junction 28 improvements
I believe it's going to take 2 years to complete. Although this will move the traffic onto a new alignment unless they're actually going to widen the A12 which there doesn't appear to be any plans to do (should have been done years ago) then all this is doing is putting more traffic onto an already overloaded road.
Re: M25 junction 28 improvements
Work appears to already be underway, the land is being cleared though believe this is just for the welfare centre.
Will the loop road end up being part of the A12 or M25, or something like an A12(M), a very short motorway?
As pointed out it seems silly the Brentwood Bypass will not be widened. On the westbound carriageway heading towards Brook Street there is often congestion now with traffic backing up to the roundabout.

Re: M25 junction 28 improvements
It'll be a sliproad off a motorway, so part of the M25, just like the sliproads connecting the M25 to the roundabout.

Don't rule out NH cocking it up and ending the motorway immediately at the diverge...

I'd expect well informed people from within the industry to satisfy themselves before raising doubt - it took me about 3 minutes.
Naturally the information is readily available within the DCO (Schedule 4 Part 1) and shown on the Streets, Rights of Way and Access plans.
Yes the entire loop is to be a special road.

Re: M25 junction 28 improvements
You can forgive my justified cynicism given that several major highway schemes have got these basics wrong, including the still in planning LTC which will have arbitrary terminal points for motorway restrictions, where also the A1(M), M56 spring to mind, or have forgone the logical processes to designate using legislation rather than some protracted TRO process in the name of political expediency (A14).RichardA35 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 21, 2022 12:04I'd expect well informed people from within the industry to satisfy themselves before raising doubt - it took me about 3 minutes.

Having had to spend the last half decade dealing with a supposed "industry expert" at NH to get a Section 278 signed off because he knows best, I wouldn't credit it with much. I spend enough time "enjoying" the English trunk road system to know that actual traffic engineering competence is a secondary concern to public relations and looking good to their political masters.

There's this masterpiece a couple of junctions along: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.49922 ... 384!8i8192

Re: M25 junction 28 improvements
The motorway status continues further along the sliproads than it does on the mainline itself. The M25 arbitrarily ends immediately at the diverge for no obvious reason.jackal wrote: ↑Sun Aug 21, 2022 20:28 There's this masterpiece a couple of junctions along: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.49922 ... 384!8i8192

Re: M25 junction 28 improvements
Work has now started on the M25 Junction 28 improvement scheme. It's due to be completed by summer 2025.

Re: M25 junction 28 improvements
This is a scheme that's slipped to the back of my mind. It's finally updated on OSM.
OpenStreetMap link
It will take a few days for OSM to render the scheme in full, so you may not be able to see it (in full) until this process is done.

Re: M25 junction 28 improvements
Considering the chosen option I am surprised they haven’t include an A12 westbound to M25 northbound freeflow link like this.
Re: M25 junction 28 improvements
That's lovely. Making three of the east facing A12 to M25 movements freeflow would work wonders and the radii of the extra slips you added is no worse than the one being built.Fluid Dynamics wrote: ↑Sun Apr 14, 2024 12:26 Considering the chosen option I am surprised they haven’t include an A12 westbound to M25 northbound freeflow link like this.
How would you like your grade separations, Sir?
Big and complex.

Nah, that's too logical.Fluid Dynamics wrote: ↑Sun Apr 14, 2024 12:26 Considering the chosen option I am surprised they haven’t include an A12 westbound to M25 northbound freeflow link like this.

That’s ingenious! I’m immediately sad that it’s too late to submit it to the consultation because it’s a fantastic modification to the design.Fluid Dynamics wrote: ↑Sun Apr 14, 2024 12:26 Considering the chosen option I am surprised they haven’t include an A12 westbound to M25 northbound freeflow link like this.

Re: M25 junction 28 improvements
It's a very similar idea I had for Denton Island, I'm surprised we've never actually done it in this country but then I remember we only do roundabout junctions and stupidly oversize links that are not viable economically because of DMRB being the worst design guidance in the world where junctions are concerned.Chris5156 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 15, 2024 08:53That’s ingenious! Re: M25 junction 28 improvements
One of the rejected options was similar to the nice idea above, though with excess structures.

Re: M25 junction 28 improvements
Another option would have been to sacrifice the free flow for the A12 to the west and run it up to the roundabout on the line of the westbound on-slip. No need then for bridges to cross the M25 on-slip or eastbound A12.
Such an arrangement would send the message the through traffic on the A12 into London is discouraged. For central London, M25/M11 is quicker to Redbridge than the A12 anyway. Perhaps make the A12 west an extension of the A118 and extend thd A127 to Redbridge?
Re: M25 junction 28 improvements
This would make sense as well - especially given it won't be long before Gallows Corner falls apart and is likely replaced with an at-grade junction anyway.SouthWest Philip wrote: ↑Mon Apr 15, 2024 12:20Another option would have been to sacrifice the free flow for the A12 to the west and run it up to the roundabout on the line of the westbound on-slip. Re: M25 junction 28 improvements
This is another case where people systematically underestimate the amount of through traffic. The straightover freeflow is absolutely justified on volumes.SouthWest Philip wrote: ↑Mon Apr 15, 2024 12:20Another option would have been to sacrifice the free flow for the A12 to the west and run it up to the roundabout on the line of the westbound on-slip. Rerouting traffic is a more complex topic, which would also impact the A13 and A130, for instance (Google Maps has the A12, A13 and M11 routes into Central London from Colchester basically tied).
